Puncak
In the mountains between Bandung and Bogor is the lovely Puncak, an area synonymous woth cool, misty mountains. Here there are leisurely trails across hills and valleys, ahigh altitude preserve, a tea estate, mountain climbing and a drive-through zoo. But above all there is a wide variety of hotels nestled on the hills. Puncak (Summit) has commonly come to refer to the area on both sides of the summit (1,500 m), from Cianjur east of it to just above Bogor west of it. Refer to “The Padalarang and Rajamandala Area” for points of interest along the way.
Puncak easily accessible by private car, or by taking a bus from Bandung. From Bandung to Puncak proper is two-hour drive on the average, if you don’t set out during a traffic-intensive time of day.
Directions. From Bandung, take the toll road an head toward Padalarang. After exiting at Padalarang, turn right onto the Puncak route.
Tou pass through Padalarang, Cipatat, Rajamandalam Ciranjang, and Cianjur, which is a gateway to the south, to places like Sukabumi, Selabintana, Pelabuanratu, Cibeber, Pagelarang and Sindangbarang. To bypass Cianjur’s busy downtown area, watch for the road sign to Bogor directing you to the right, not far beyond the bus terminal. After a kilometer or so, you come to the main Puncak road again, where you turn right and begin the climb to the summit.
Above Cipanas it is less populated and cooler; resort hotels also become more frequent. Numerous small roads left and right lead off into the landscape, so if you feel like exploring you might want to take one of them a short distance, park and go for a walk on the mountain trails.
